Behind my sister-in-law’s house in Head-of-Millstream, New Brunswick is forest, much of it is fir treed with the occasional sprinkle of birch and maple to add that shock of brightness. I was appalled to learn that they regularly burn those pretty birches, the same ones I was buying in decorative sticks from Walmart. Two different worlds with fiscal expediency explaining the use of wood. She laughed at me and promptly had my brother-in-law cut down a slim tall tree, chop it into car-sized staves for use in my winter planters in Ontario.
